THE BOOKS
Out in Architecture is a collection of reflections by LGBTQIA+ individuals within and adjacent to the field of architecture.
Ranging from identity within and beyond practice to reclaiming space and redefining systems, these essays form a cache of struggle, celebration, hope, and wisdom—while aiming to propel conversation into action and institutional change.
The idea began with a spark at the end of 2022. Despite the numerous Pride Month webinars and panel discussions at conferences around the nation, a group of LGBTQIA+ architects, designers, and activists set out to record the experiences that were shared in a way that could be referenced in the future. The books are a physical manifestation of the resilience and ingenuity of LGBTQIA+ architects and designers.
What started as a collation of stories evolved into a process of "building a house of joy." We created space for vulnerability, depth, and celebration. We thought through, together, what our visibility in the profession means, whose hearts and minds we sought to change, and what this book and community means for future generations of LGBTQIA+ architects and designers.
